Unable to install sound drivers on Shuttle XPC

Hello all

I've been trying for a few weeks now to sort out this issue, with no joy. I've even tried contacting Realtek for advice on this, but no response.

Basically, my PC has onboard sound which I can't use because the drivers won't install. Every time I try to install it fails with an error message which is very vague and unhelpful, just saying failed to install Realtek HD audio drivers. The original drivers were on the cd which came with the system, and I've also tried downloading them from Realtek's website with the same result.

If I try and update the drivers through device manager it just doesn't do anything. If I click reinstall driver the button greys out and it wont open the hardware update wizard.

I'm starting to think that this might be a problem with the hardware itself. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

Matt

This may work, works for me when I rebuild Shuttles to XP, or Vista. I rebuild them a lot, clears out the shit that builds up.

Try uninstalling the drivers.
Check in BIOS the onboard sound is enabled.
Don't use the disk, or Realtek's site.
Run Windows update.
Once it's finished updating it'll have optional updates in the advanced section, one of which will be the soundcard if yer lucky.
D/L and install that ftw, maybe.

As an aside, some Shuttles ship with both realtek and creative drivers on the disk. If the above doesn't do it. uninstall again and try the creative drivers.

Good luck

Hi Ian

Forgot to say in my first post that I've tried uninstalling the drivers before, and it won't do it as it says that the drivers may be required to start windows. Is there a way to overide this?

Can't see the files would in any way affect windows startup whatsoever.
As it's realtek, run the setup from the CD again and select 'remove'

Another option is to hit Shuttle's website, pick your model under support and try the drivers from there.

What Realtek chip model/type is it? (AC'97 or Azalia HD audio).

Right, I think I've tried everything and nothing works!

The windows update trick didn't find anything. I''ve tried downloading drivers from Shuttle and Intel with the same results as before - driver failing to install. The HD audio device is definately enabled in bios. Really can't understand it!

Help!

Edit - also, I'm pretty sure it's AC97, but I really don't know how to confirm this.

What model shuttle system do you have? It should specify in the manual what audio chip it has. Also, what is the device listed as when not installed (full name)?

The model of shuttle is SG31G2

The paper manual is just a quick installation guide - the manual on the cd doesn't say anything about the audio chip.

In device manager the name of the audio device is - Realtek High Definition Audio
