PS3 DVD Player Quality

I'm selling loads of old stuff, games, etc to hopefully fund a PS3 and realised I could maybe sell my Oppo DVD player too if the PS3 is any good at playing DVD's. Does it upscale them or do anything with the picture.

Enlighten me please!

Yes, it does upscale in BD/DVD Settings, you can alter the DVD upscaler settings - looks nice it does! Although, I did read this:

Quote:
The bottom line is that the PS3's upscaling is pretty good, although it doesn't compare to top-of-the-line players such as the Oppo DV-981HD or the new high-def disc players with HQV processing, such as the Samsung BD-P1200 and the Toshiba HD-XA2. On the other hand, the PS3's DVD performance is definitely a big step up from that of the Xbox 360 Elite. In the final analysis, when you consider that upscaling is just one of the many functions of the PS3, we think the performance is pretty impressive.

It seems these guys did some pretty serious testing so you may like to read the full article. I should point out that was written over a year ago and there have been other updates since but I don't know they improved on the PS3's upscaling performance or not - sorry, I'm not helping much am I

It upscales DVDs really well but I'd really recommend reading Lyris' review on DVD Times as stuff which looks good to me is not the same as stuff that looks good to him as he knows far more about this.

Perhaps he'd be able to give you a comparison between your Oppo upscaling and the PS3 upscaling as I believe he's a bit of an Oppo fan.

Oops, should have mentioned my Oppo is one of the older 971H's, not that fancy new 1080p ones so it'll most likely be better than that!

Although I've just realised. I have majority of DVD's being Region 2, but a load of ones from US, Asia etc that then wouldn't play on PS3 as it's region locked isn't it and I'd probably be going for a PAL one!

I'll have a wee read through those links and try to decide on something!

I have a Oppo 971H too (boxed in the cupboard these days tbh), and I must admit I did prefer the PS3's upscaling by a considerable margin, even if the Oppo performed better in the artificial tests. No escaping the region locking however.

Well I started to watch the first Lord of the Rings DVD last night on the PS3 and think it's miles better than the Oppo. Really quite impressed with it, and the interface is nice as usual like it was on PS2 DVD playback and good to get the player to react to your input fast for once as my Oppo takes ages to respond after using the remote to pause it for example. Quite a bit delay for some reason but the PS3 is very fast for it.

AND I love how after turning the PS3 off and on, and saves your DVD point automatically and just fires you straight back in there.

I had the Oppo aswell, but i sold it as soon as i got my PS3. The quality on the PS3, is vastly superior in my eyes.

The PS3 is awsome for so many media related tasks. Media streaming, web browsing, Blu-Ray and DVD upscaling all are spot on!

Even when there weren't so many AAA games I was a happy customer as I felt I got a huge amount of hardware for the money.

Only REALLY stupid thing, is that It's remote uses BT with no IR backup, which means my Harmony 1000 doesn't work..... Baaaaah!

Great bit of kit though, and what great value 10 months ago, just based on the media capabilities.

I've got one of these beauties, works like a dream with my Harmony One. The BT remote is now in a cupboard somewhere.

Thanks! I also need an RF to IR convertor for the automated lights server... My cupboard is thankfully hidden from view!

Cheers for the Tip.
