Well we all know that the Dreamcast is, of course still alive. You shaking your head and clenching your fist - be quiet. (Yes it is alive)
But what about our beloved Megadrive/Genesis? The system hasn’t seen a game released for many a year now, what with funky 3D graphics, new-fangled online play and these darn kids with their iPods. The system doesn’t really stand a chance these days.
Well 2008 could be the year that 16-bit beast unleashes it’s ‘Blast-Processor’ upon us once more.
Codenamed “Tavern RPG,” Pier Solar, (it’s now official name), is to be a completely brand new Megadrive title, developed specifically for the system and is hopefully going to be released this year!
According to the developers, the game has been made totally from the ground-up, using original graphics, images and coding, built for the game.
The wonderful trailer for the game (above), shows us that Pier Solar will be in a traditional J-RPG style, with turn based fighting and walking around dungeons and towns from a birds-eye view. It’s looking pretty good to me.
Apparently the game will be released on a cartridge format, which means that for the first time in years, Sega Nerds everywhere will (hopefully) be able to slap a new game between the dust flaps of their old Megadrives.
It's great that hombrew stuff is still getting released on the Megadrive but this is the second game in recent times that's been a bloody RPG, how about a real game next time like a shooter or scrolling fighter?
Yeah, but this is an original game that makes some good use of the Mega Drive's hardware. The Begger Prince was just a translation of a Taiwanese game released years ago. One of the main guys behind it posts over at ASSEMblergames.com. He has a thread in the Sega Dev forum about this game. I'm going to buy the Mega CD and Mega Drive versions ! It does look very cool.
The Mega Dd version will have a full red book CD OST and maybe a few other little extras. Nothing has been made final yet. On the official site there's a few samples of the Mega CD audio tracks. The mega drive ones have yet to be done or at least they haddn't been when I last checked.
