Downloaded the rather large demo out of curiosity, expecting the usual bland landscapes and questionable links to the movie. When the intro started though, I had to look again as I thought it was bloody real. Then I started playing and realised it is probably the first movie license that isn't completely shite. It's not great, but I guess for younger gamers it would be damn good fun.

Anyone else pleasantly surprised?

i was when it first started. but the gameplay became incredibly monotonous, from one shallow fight to another. i was sleeping by the time the demo was over and i still managed to clear it.

I enjoyed it more than the film too and felt they captured Johnny Depp really well, quite aimilarly to the van Helsing game which was much more fun than the film :)

I'd say Riddick and Spiderman 2 take that crown personally.

POTC just seemed rather bland to me, sure it looked pretty, but it played like a dog.

Th return of the King Final Fantasy Effort wasnt too bad, but to make a Good movie game EA seem to think you need to ape another, although its bad form it also makes them more bearable on the whole

I played this demo for all of two minutes, just couldn't be bothered to play it, and I wanted to as well. The original game on the PS2 was quite enjoyable, and started off much more interesting as well.

I thought it was okay and quite liked it - much better than I expected (maybe thats why). I liked the duelling system at the end, there's potential there - it reminded me a little bit of Barbarian. The inclusion of set pieces while duelling it worked for me - but I can't help but wonder if they might get annoying if you die and have to watch them over and over again. Mind you - it was so bloody easy even for a tutorial that I can't see that being an issue.

it is bilge and here's my original post on the subject (http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showpost.php?p=1097961&postcount=1861)

i played the prototype version of this a while back and spoke to the designer that did it. the prototype was about a hojillion times better than this and after he left they just threw it away and went back to designing crap combat and painfully dull platforming.

also, NO MORE BEAM WALkING IN ANY GAME EVER.

walking across beams is shit and boring and frustrating. prince of persia and god of war did the same thing and you would have thought people would have learnt by now. not eurocom though.

this game is just contributing to the flood of mediocre tie in titles that are choking the industry. sames as that spider man 3 train wreck.

Oh I dunno Chops - Spatial might disagree with you he's been fair racking up the achievement points from this over the weekend so he must be enjoying it.

See also - DVDMIKE - A man who I would have expected to playthrough on PS3 - He's been busy hosing it all weekend as well.

I thought the demo was ok - In move-tie-in videogames land it's certainly above average - just not by much.

Eh? What's that?

I'm sure I have no idea what you're talking about

Well, seeing as I've been rumbled - it is one fine looking game for a kids orientated movie tie in.

I'm led to believe that it's using the Unreal engine and it looks pretty good in parts. Some really nice lighting and depth of field.

Impressive character models on times. Captain Jack looks pretty good and the Davey Jones model is very impressive - same with Geoffrey Rush's Barbosa which is scarily good. Chun Yow Fat's is pretty nifty too.

Kiera Knightly not so much. :(

Orland Bloom... hmm. Looks like he's a cross between The Singing Detective and a burns victim. :scared:

But scratch that surface and it does start to fall apart pretty quickly. Hammer the buttons to defeat the pirates and repeat. Engage in a one on one duel and erm... hammer the buttons some more.

And there was clearly licensing issues as witty Jack doesn't say much more than they were able to cobble together from audio from the film. I think that's also reflected in the fact that Knightly and Bloom look so bad - almost like they couldn't get them to face map them and had to do it off images.

Thankfully it's quite short (thankful in terms of not making your eyes bleed, not in the getting value for money sense).

It's the dawn of a new era mind you - when rubbish movie tie ins can start to look very, verry pretty but still play like the same old same old.

Splice the mainbrace, up the poop deck, shiver me timbers and so on and so forth.

but are you enjoying it spatial or just playing for achievements?

hells, i spent a day playing open season (which yoshi gave me grief for) and i've played a bit of cars for achievements.

i used to be a gamerscore junkie but no longer!!

i am a reformed man and now i only play stuff i enjoy

I wouldn't say its the worst game I've ever played and the brevity of it saved the day - kind of says a lot when 60% of the game is based on Dead Mans Chest.

And while I enjoy a good thousand points as much as the next man, even I stop short of playing Open Season, Cars and Meet the Robinsons :D

Open season isn't what you think it is, i.e. kids platformer. it has some interesting game mechanics and it looks fairly nice. if you do get desperate for an achievement fix then its worth a rent.

back on topic, i saw a clip of the pirates game where you fight davey jones on a mast as the ship goes round a whirl pool. i was impressed by that
