Couldn't see this as being posted anywhere else...GH2 track packs now up.
500 points per pack, only 3 songs per pack?! No thanks!!
PeteJ
11-04-2007, 11:22 AM
ffs that's a rip off. Considering they are charging £70 in the first place the first bunch at least should be free.
What tracks are in each pack?
Pack 1:
Bark at the Moon - Ozzy Osbourne
Hey You - The Exies
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Pack 2:
Killer Queen - Queen
Take it Off - The Donnas
Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Group
Pack 3:
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Infected - Bad Religion
Stellar - Incubus
Marmite
11-04-2007, 11:32 AM
I quite fancy pack 3, but 500 points?! Ouch.
Im still reeling from the retail price
My problem is I'm after:
Bark at the Moon
Ace of Spades
Killer Queen
Stellar
Which means I'd have to get all 3 packs andthe price is too steep for my liking.

Are they the proper songs?
If so, its probably all licensing malarkey and you are essentially paying for MP3s as well.
How much is 500 points in cash?

Quite frankly the pricing of this is a disgrace. I certainly wont be spending any points on this DLC.
It'll just be the covers from Guitar Hero 1, there should be no licensing issues.

Lets put this into MAJOR perspective.
1 pack of 3 songs, MORE expensive than Jetpack refuelled.
An absolute joke, the game cost me £62.99 and they want me to pay another £15 for 9 tracks? Seriously, did NOBODY tell them that it was far, FAR too expensive?
Let alone the fact you can't even by single tracks!
Wow, what poor marketing for a superb game.

I was looking forward to these but they can suck my balls. I'm not spending that much on 3 songs! 500 for all 9 tracks would be just about ok... I hope people vote with their wallets and don't buy any

No from what i remeber on the ps2 version these are covers. This is indeed too much i would pay max 100 per song, and these songs should be seaparate not bundled in packs which i dont want. No dice redoctane/ms i wont be buying at that price thank you very much.
Geoff D
11-04-2007, 12:32 PM
That is disappointing. Far too much money for not enough return as far as I'm concerned. I'll have to stick with my existing PS2 versions.
PeteJ
11-04-2007, 12:43 PM
Yep, very disappointing. The chance of DLC was one of the main reasons I 'upgraded' to the 360 version, but these prices are a joke.
Even worse than Oblivion's Horse Armour pack - have they learnt nothing?
Pookmunki

£95, which in real terms is what most people will be paying for the full GH2 360 experience so far, can net you both games on PS2, with ALL the songs...
After the recent good pricing of Castlevania et al, its a shame to see this.
We should get a petition to see Heavenly Star (or some other Lumines track) in Guitar Hero, see if they get the point ;)

Is there a way we can feed back to them on this? Other than no one buying it. It's an absolute joke, I was thinking it would be 800 for the whole lot, greedy bastards.
Microsoft are shooting themselves in the foot with the DLC malarkey, the one thing they should be bending over backwards to promote because for the most part it is far superior to anything Sony has done.
I'm worried...
PeteJ
11-04-2007, 01:25 PM
I wonder who set the pricing, I'm not sure who owns the licence for these GH1 tracks. Could be Harmonix, Activision, Red Octain, MTV or MS!
stormbreak
11-04-2007, 01:41 PM
This kind of makes me glad I cracked and bought the PS2 versions ages ago.
GH 1 only costs £20, and that has way more songs and has to cover manufacturing costs aswell. Paying £15 for nine songs? The most I would pay for 9 songs which were already on GH1 is 500 points.

I have to say the more i think of it the more i wish i could return my gh2 now. I bought it purely as i knew dlc would make for a game that lasted longer and be like the best of gh. Now with the price seemingly set 500 point for 3 old songs whats it going to cost for new songs that they havent already paid for the mind boggles.

All Guitar Hero songs are covers.
Spatial101
11-04-2007, 02:11 PM
Just to add that at that price I won't be buying them either.
If they'd even lumped them together at 1200 points I could kind of accept that, but totalling 1500 and the lack of individual downloads if they aren't going to include them in one bunch, just doesn't sit right with me.
T'is an error of Lumines Live style proportions! :o
And I'm expecting a similar internet backlash as we had with that.

There was a backlash for lumines but didn't major nelson still reveal that loads of people had still bought it (myself included)
Spatial101

Yeah, I bought it as well.
But they did come out and say they'd learnt their lesson from it (hence the Heavenly Star download being put up for free in a bid to make some sort of amends to the fans).
Clearly they've not learnt much after all. And before anyone says it yes, I'm aware its possible that MS may not have set the price point here, but ultimately it's their network and they decide yay or nay.

I can't view any other forum from work, but I presume the general reaction has been 'wtf?'?
Unfortunately they can't go back on their pricing now, because that will piss off all the people who have paid the money.
i've done my mini protest bit.
had it on back order with HMV as the price was ok, i bought on the basis i was expecting some good DLC as already have 1 & 2 on the PS2
seeing this, which is a total piss take, i've cancelled the order and won't be buying the game now.
will either wait for GH3 with a wireless guitar or that EA Rock Band thingy.

I'm absolutely insane I know, but I think I'm going to be purchasing all 3 packs tonight >_< I draw the limit at £30 tho as I said I'd happily pay £30 for the GH1 back catalogue so I'll spend up to that much getting the GH1 songs I want then that'll be it. I did get the game for £59.95 though so technically these first 3 packs are free :P

Someone over one MajorNelson has pointed out if they released all the tracks from GH1 at this price then it'll cost £68 to get them all. The Twats! (Harmony/Red Octance - not the calculatory bloke)
Jebus
11-04-2007, 07:21 PM
Yeah and MajorNelson himself has stated that we should think about "Copyright and licensing fees" in relation to the price...which is bullshit.
A) They are covers
B) They are OLLLLLLLLLLLLD
C) It didn't cost £68 to get them the first time around.
Basically, all excuses aside, it's just ****ing greedy.
You could charge 50p a track and the amount of people who'd buy it would FAR outweigh the cost of doing it.
Whats 50p x 1 million Major, or do the figures only work when they are to justify an overpriced rip-off?

What a rip off, existing Guitar Hero 1 songs should be FREE for god's sake! I don't mind paying for new content but repackaging content that was made 2 years ago and charging nearly £5 for the privilage is obscene. The £70 price tag was a joke anyway given the £50 price of the PS2 version (how is £20 more justified for a PS2 port?!) but this really takes the piss.

I urge everyone to sign that petition - it has increased in numbers hugely since it was setup - additionally there's a thread on red octanes forum to complain about the pricing - people power c'mon everyone.
I bought packs 1 & 3 but I do feel a nut for it - The points were sitting there, I wanted BatM and Infected so I paid.
But I won't buy no more - 100 points a song it's gotta be.

14-04-2007, 01:36 PM
I bought pack one and that was hard enough for me.
Before the downloadable content was released I was really hoping for Ace of Spades so it was a must get for me but, when I was spending the points I felt as if Bill Gates himself had violated me anally.
If all the songs from GH had been made available in a song pack worth a tenner I would`ve paid it but 4 quid for three songs is tantamount to theft! :curse:

I'm a big supporter of DLC, but even I can't justify these crazy prices. It's really stupid of everyone involved, it can't take much brains to work out that everyone is going to compare the price of the DLC songs with the price of the songs that come with the game.

DDR (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/02/27/ddr-content-theme-and-pictures.aspx)
If those songs can be 100 points each, or 10 for 800, why can't GHs? How are the licensing costs more, or whatever excuse they're using?
MartyG
14-04-2007, 03:49 PM
The thing that really gets me is the justification for bundling the tracks together:
Is it easier to process one song and release it and would have it to be more expensive? Or can you take some of that development, bundle it together, and drop the price down. All those songs have to go through that process. If you have three songs entering the approval process, individually, that’s three times more problems–and there’s more probability for error. So, let’s bundle them together, and test them as a unit and drive the price down."
It's just utter bullshit - it's purely down to making people buy all the packs for the more premium tracks - this sort of thing really gets my hackles up.
Jebus
14-04-2007, 03:58 PM
I must admit, I pretty much liked Major before this, but his defence of this is just unforgivable in my eyes. Absolutely lame and to be honest all the people who believed he was an impartial kinda guy will all be shown that he isn't. He likes to pretend he is but this kind of thing is indefensable, rather than lie he should have said nothing.
To be honest, it's embarrassing for everyone involved.
MartyG
14-04-2007, 04:28 PM
Totally, I use to think that despite MN's Microsoft employment that he was largely impartial - it's quite clear now that the MN stuff really is just a corporate mouthpiece and nothing more.
Spatial101
14-04-2007, 04:36 PM
Have to admit I've never thought anything else of Major N. He's a good source of info and gives a quick insight into what we're can expect or what's just been delivered, but he's just another corporate employee at the end of the day.
His comments regarding the DLC are total rubbish though - they sound like the remarks of someone who kind of wishes it hadn't blow up on the day of his press junket so he wouldn't have to field the questions, and had to think of answers during the train ride there.
At least with Lumines / Horse Armour thing the parties involved held their hands up and went "Do you know what? We got it wrong and we're going to learn from this next time around". What's more worrying is that this time they're justifying it despite the obvious outcry.
ChrisField

Musically speaking some of the covers in the game are superb, perhaps not vocally but musically they are really of a high quality.
Would I prefer to listen to the originals? Always. Do I care when I'm playing? No! They're plenty good enough for the game. Once I'm 10 seconds into a track thats it for me.... zoned out!

I reckon we'll get GH1 drip-fed like this and if we're lucky some game tracks (i.e Halo2) and that'll be it till GH3. Perhaps stupidly I thought we'd get more good stuff - at least then 500 would've seemed more attractive.

Fair points but in both those instances they quickly held their hands up and said "Ok, we're hearing what your saying and we'll reconsider any future pricing".

The thing with Oblivion is they could charge different prices as all the subsequent releases were different in content. How can Activision charge less for 3 songs in the second wave of packs without lowering the price of the first wave?

Why would it be up to Microsoft? It doesn't own the content, it just delivers it. It's up to the publisher and developer to set the price as long as MS gets it cut.

Listen to the gamerscoreblog podcast (http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2007/04/21/544319.aspx) from 20th April at 18mins 40secs.
The way it works is, think of Xbox Live as a retail store. Somebody comes to us with the product they want to sell, they tell us how much they want to sell it for ....
... as the retailer, technically we [MS] have the ability I think, or right to, we set the price, but they [Publisher] actually set the suggested price, we [MS] set the real price.
So, Microsoft have the final say, after-all, if MS don't agree with the pricing, it won't go on XBL Marketplace.

It's a shame :( If they've gone to the bother of redoing GH1 with bass lines etc for the 360 one they'd be as well to release one uber-pack priced along the lines of the Shivering Isles expansion.
I'd buy it :)

What they should do is change packs 1,2 and 3 to include five songs instead of three for the same cost. That way, people who have downloaded them can delete the packs from their hard drives and re-download them and get the extra songs for no more money. People who haven't downloaded will be getting the same improved deal.
For all of the other songs, they should release them all induvidually but release packs where you can get them a bit cheaper if you buy them altogether. A bit like PGR3's car packs.

I always thought 100/150 points per song was the way to go - let people build their own customised playlists sort of thing !!!
The handling of the song packs has been a complete shambles, if they decide to continue they're gonna have to do something quick as Guitar Hero 3 isn't that far off, tbh I'd prefer if they concentrated in bringing the 80s version to Live instead of the old GH 1 songs. Activision/Red Octane really can't afford to mess customers about with EA/MTV/Harmonix breathing down their neck with Rock Band.

Oh my gawd. I thought this wasn't going to happen.
I guess they're testing the water with one pack to see how big the 'furore' is now that we've had months to get used to the pricing and packaging.
I still NEEEEED, Ziggy Stardust, No-One Knows, Take Me Out and the other you mention.

To be honest, as much as I love Judas Priest, and as much as I've been wanting "You've Got Another Thing Comin'", and as great a song as it is, I can't help but feel it's far too easy (as are Smoke On The Water and I Wanna Be Sedated) even on Expert. Five starred all three first time.
That said, they're all good fun to play, and definitely worthwhile additions, just would've been nice if they were a bit more complicated like BATM and Frankenstein. :)

I'm currently offline, will the songs be available in my 360 if I download the pack with my HDD attached to my brother's 360?
Thanks
Keith
12-07-2007, 05:40 PM
Yep, as long as you do it on your gamertag that'll work fine, but you'll only be able to play them on your 360 when it's on Live if you do it that way. :(

Reading the broken/fixed 360 topics, I was fearing exactly this. What a crap system, specially as I'm not going online until november. :(

Activision to stick to song pack pricing, sold over 300k already
Activision has announced that it has sold over 300,000 downloadable song packs for Guitar Hero II, stating that the pricing appears to be very attractive and desirable for consumers.
quote:
Activision began offering three packs of three songs each in April priced at $6.25, but gamers quickly took to online forums and blogs to vent their anger at the cost.
Despite the outcry, Welch said the fact that Activision had sold more than 300,000 song packs indicated that current prices were "very attractive and desirable for consumers."
"We do actively look at and monitor the message boards. We do listen, and for us, it's about offering even better music at current price points to get consumers excited about."

I don't understand that...
Basically what he meant to say was people will pay regardless eventhough they whinge about it, so LOLz to any moaners.
$6 is a trivial amount of money when it's dad's credit card anyway.

I'd pay a tenner for a Teenage Fanclub pack. Circa Bandwagonesque era.
Start the petition now. Starsign, The Concept and Alchoholiday.

14-08-2007, 09:29 PM
It's doing good mate - slight issues at first as the SP seems to be a bit tetchy (you have to tilt the neck right up to activate) but it's fine now. Certainly a lot better than the alternative of no guitar at all! Cheers again mate. :)
These three new tracks then - "Teenagers" is rubbish, but the other two are great fun on Expert. :)

See I'd have thought Teenagers would be ok but clearly - new single = promo need.
As for the guitar - ?blimey didn't know it didn't have to be held right up. I knew my scores were being robbed somehow....
More exciting than reading your post I'd bet. But anyway......
Ooooh get you.
D'you seriously think that Oasis stuff would be fun to play on Guitar Hero?, it's boring enough playing their best stuff on a real guitar, My Chemical Romance might not be my cup of tea but Dead was really fun to play on GH 2, I doubt the same would be true if they stuck Live Forever or Supersonic on GH tbh.
Manics would be good provided it was Generation Terrorists stuff and the Stones are already in GH2 and GH 3 (Can't You Hear Me Knockin and Paint it Black).
edit
Stone Roses now confirmed for GH 3, much better choice than Oasis tbh

Ooooh get you.
It was a purposely silly post to match the tone of yours.
In answer to your question - I think later Oasis stuff could be quite cool to play - stuff off there last album was, in my non-guitar playing mind, pretty good. A little bit of Lyla or Meaning of soul ??
Yes please.

Trivium - Detonation
Atreyu - Right Side of the Bed
Protest the Hero - Bury the Hatchet
500 MS points

Was looking at the tracks the other day and none of them look worth the money although I would like to play an Incubus song and Ace of Spades is a class song to play so would like that too, but 500 for 3 songs is a bit dodgy, should have done 100 per song or something and they would have made more money I reckon!

Another pack up for 500 points been up a week or two now - Indie Pack with songs by different artists not bothered myself will hold out now for GH3 (as long as I don't have the 500 points and end up pissed on 360 I'll be ok - aka It's gonna happen).
