i just downloaded the trial and played two songs.

in the trial you get some game modes and three songs to try at different difficulties.

i have to say that i am underwhelmed and unimpressed. it is one of the most lack lustre rhythm type games i've played and there is nothing compelling or exciting about it.

easy is ridiculously easy and hard really isn't too challenging.

i think the wednesday after guitar hero 2 may have been a bad time to release it as GH2 is far superior and more fun and since it is so close to release it is hard to justify the points for something that is similar but no where near as fun

it looks ok, the fireworks certainly aren't breathtaking by any stretch of the imagination.

the audio is odd as well, the music tracks that i played really aren't great and i have no desire to go back to it and hear them again.

it may be just me, some of you may like it but there will be no points buying for me today

i agree, its not really up to much and songs seems quite shite. It hurts my eye's too.

two ways they could have made it better:

1) use more than four buttons like in daigasso brothers on DS
2) I wanna play the tune, not fire off some fireworks. Its no fun when any mistakes don't affect the music, it makes it feel less involved

Its out and it 800ms points.

Well its a great fun little game i didnt know what to expect as i hadnt read anything about it. I knew it was by ea with some of the geowars people. Its a great rythem game you time the presses of buttons to the music and you are greeted with a nice fireworks display with each button press. There seems alot of room for high scoreathons on this one.

So you guys have gotten A** on every song, then?

If you think you're good just because you can clear a song, this game isn't for you. :)

If you're a Bemani player obsessed with getting your SS, or your AAA on every song, you're going to absolutely love this.

I think the reason everyone's complaining is because of the rhythm games they've been playing - Games which don't reward you for the actual accuracy for hitting the note like Beatmania, etc. I just got 100% hit ratio on a Hard song but only scored a B, because a lot of my notes were off time.

I played, I immediately bought. Don't be put off by the negative comments because this is a brilliant game for you score freaks.

Unfortunately so - The songs that are listed in the demo are all the songs in the game at the moment, but there'll be more coming with DLC I presume.

I'm pleasantly suprised by this and tempted into spending 800 on it...

The thing is, Jetpack redefined value for money and now almost every game should be that price range. I feel that value for money, again, this ISN'T anywhere near the Jetpack value.

How many songs does this have in full btw, and are we likely to see more coming at a premium DLC rate?

Very tempted though, nice little game.

Is it worth plugging in the guitar and trying it? Surely the fret buttons are just mapped to the console so to speak, for example the red and green fret buttons are just that, the red and green buttons on the pad...?

My problem with it is exactly that...what does this game do or give that warrants it being twice the price? :( The MS pricing strategy is odd to say the least...or whoever chooses the prices.

Because I only have the trial version I just sent Yosh a message on LIVE asking him about the multiplayer, only to find out there is NO live aspect whatsoever to this game? No score attack, co-op, no multiplayer except for split screen local?

Seriously, in this day and age : Local multiplayer isn't good enough, especially when you have to go online to ****ing buy or download the damn game.

Twice the price of Jetpack, no online. I never felt EA were that bad when it came to ripping people off (not like some people anyway) but jesus...

A real shame cos it's a fun little game :(

I think you look at it wrong though, otherwise people should question almost every game purchase as to what do they do that makes em worth being so much more than you can pick up Dreamcast games for now :P

The way I see it Jet Pac Refuelled was an absolute bargain, I havn't played this yet, but reading posts on it makes me convinced it's still more than worth the entry price, especially compared with the likes of Eragon at £39.99 in shops ;p

Jebus
11-04-2007, 04:31 PM
I don't see how that's looking at it wrong. Last weeks game was 400 points, why exactly do they feel that Boom Boom Rocket is worth 800 points?

Surely you don't just blindly buy games? I buy them based on if I think I'll enjoy them enough to spend out £30-40 on them...I can't afford to just go buying games willy-nilly, they have to be worth it. Even at £8 (or whatver) it has to be a game I'm sure I'll enjoy for more than 10 minutes or I won't buy it.

Compare the games : (The bits in brackets are what I feel makes it value for money, I haven't bought all of them but it's what I consider to make it worth buying)

Castlevania : 800 points (Massive game)
Alien Hominid : 800 points (Replay value, multiplayer)
Worms : 800 points (Multiplayer)
Jetpack : 400 points (Big single player, multiplayer)
Boom Boom Rocket : 800 points (Err...only LOCAL multiplayer)

Out of those, which is the least value for money?

As I say, it's a good little game but in my humble opinion it's not worth 800 points, 400 and I'd buy it right this second...but to say it's worth the same as Worms, Castlevania, Alien Homind etc is wrong in my book.

MikeRox
11-04-2007, 05:08 PM
you also missed "(replay value)" out of it, I know I get faaar more play out of music/rhythm games than any other sort of game. :) Thats why I'm pretty confident I'll get my 800points worth out of this.

You could also look at games like Symphony of the Night and ask why a mere port of an existing game is worth anywhere near as much as a completely original developed game.

Jebus
11-04-2007, 05:43 PM
Yeah but with Guitar Hero II out recently as well.

For the record I didn't by Castlevania anyway, but a mate did...he had the day off yesterday and played it pretty much all day, I'd say that definitely makes the 800 points worth it. He played it a lot today as well, and has done ever since it came out!

Well the thing is, I am interesting in buying this but nobody has answered my questions!

How many songs are there?

What EXACTLY is the LIVE aspect of the game, or am I correct in thinking there is none?

What are the game modes like, breakdown of each one please!

I wish they could give us a release date list for live arcade, I would buy this if I knew another game like Luxor was out next week :)

Are there any in game (non achievement based) unlockables? I had the lovely suprise today of playing Guitar Hero II with my wife, and afterwards a new bass guitar was there to be used. Not mind-blowing but a lovely touch nonetheless!

Rythmn games of all type worry me massively on the 360 because the scope to rip off the users is there for all to see. Take Guitar Hero II for an example, great game but within a week/two weeks there is premium (read overpriced) content there for all to buy. Will they do the same with Boom Boom Rocket? It's EA, so can we safely say there will be another 10 tracks on marketplace when it's a quiet week? As I say, not Boom Boom Rocket's fault but Rythmn games on 360 worry me greatly.

Single player modes are:

Standard Game (Easy, Normal, Hard) - Your standard game. You have to hit all the fireworks that fly up with the correct buttons. The more you hit in succession, the faster your combo gauge fills up. When it's maxed out, you can use the trigger to count down a 16x score multiplier for about 10 seconds. Incredibly high accuracy is key here, as unless you're split second flawless timing, you'll hit only Good or Awesome as opposed to Perfect.

Endurance Game (Easy, Normal, Hard) - Same as Standard Game, but you keep going and the note chart keeps getting faster, and faster, until you simply fail. Same rules however.

Practice Game - Not done this yet. Assuming it's just a standard game without the score.

Freestyle - Just a complete chillout. No scores to hit, no combo, nothing. Just fireworks flying up that you can detonate to the music however you see fit.

Visualiser - Fireworks that set off in time to your own custom music

Live gameplay is done with scoreboards - For example, you can see i'm currently the highest scoring player on Xbox Live at the moment. :) But they're arranged by difficulty, and gameplay mode, both overall and track specific.

Jebus

So what is it talking about in the achievements when it mentions "laps" ? :S

Silvergun X
11-04-2007, 06:26 PM
A lap is in Endurance mode. Where a song would begin and end in standard mode is 1 lap.

Thus, 3 laps in Endurance mode, would be going through that song 3 times.

Silvergun X

1812 Overdrive and Tail light Sonata are my personal favourites. :)

About £8/9...

Freestyle - Just a complete chillout. No scores to hit, no combo, nothing. Just fireworks flying up that you can detonate to the music however you see fit.

That interests me. Would be pretty cool if they could have integrated a score system somehow but it's pretty much impossible to though I guess.

it's £6.50ish utter bargain for a brand new release imo :D finally got to play it now I've got home from work, aside from a slightly awkward way of displaying the button presses (I know they're fireworks so I'll let it slide :P) I thought it was a very relaxing game. Bought it and I'm quite enjoying it, but the music is dreadful. Quite a critical flaw for a music game... I really don't know what they were thinking, but it just isn't nice to listen to. Some are bareable... just... but most are just atrocious.

Visuals are nice enough for a while, but super repetitive. I really wish SEGA would finally come to Live Arcade and bring Space Channel 5 parts 1 & 2 with them.

I actually think the music suits the game quite well. At no point was I sat thinking that they should have used something else. There are a couple of tracks which are a bit mediocre, the William Tell track is one, but thats probably just down to taste. Horses for courses and all that.

1812 and Carmen Electra are faves at the moment, I managed to top the leaderboard for 1812 on medium earlier, how the hell Silvergun manages hard is beyond me.

He's a bast

I think I'll spend most of time squeezing points out of the medium difficulty. Hard just seems to be a bit past my level of ability at the moment.

I've only played the demo but the music is so piss poor I won't be persevering. The gameplay doesn't feel tightly tied enough to the music and the feedback for getting it right is just, well, weak.

Only got the trial but it seems pretty good, Hard was surprisingly tough but it feels a little unresponsive? Maybe if you miss it locks you out for a bit, not sure. Probably just me!

Went through the first song for five laps on endurance which was quite amusing, I see there is an achievement for five laps on hard which must be a challenge! The rest look pretty easy though.

Don't think I'll buy this just yet, coming from a big Frequency fan I feel the game is lacking something. The scoring isn't as well done as in the Harmonix titles and it does just feel like DDR on a pad...but harder because the arrows are flying about all over the screen. Similar music too, I guess.

I like most games in the genre but with GH2 released just last week I'm being kept well entertained.

Don't think I'll buy this just yet, coming from a big Frequency fan I feel the game is lacking something. Likewise. To me its all about the feedback. Frequency fed back to me in a fantastically positive way when I got things right. As did Amplitdude (though personally I preferred Frequency). This just doesn't. Oooo fireworks. Yawn.

Edit: In fairness perhaps I shouldn't be so harsh. I think Frequency got things 100% spot on as far as rhythym action games with a gamepad go. Nah **** it. This is an amateuar effort at best.

Made by the lavely guys who did Geometry Wars but it's nothing like it!

Imagine DDR crossed with Fantavision with simply yet gorgeous graphics and with nice music and you will get the idea of this.

I played it on easy and it was too easy but try it on hard and I became all goggle eyed!

I had a quick blast this morning before work, found it quite tricky to nail the Perfects. It'd be nice if there were speed mods like with Bemani games, maybe they are in there somewhere!?

Must admit, being color-blind the green and yellow (down and up) look very similar to me and on those I have to check the direction arrow each time, does make life a bit harder, but a very good game overall.

I had to turn the arrows off and go with no markings because I'm so used to the positions of the arrows on screen in DDR games. When the left arrow appeared on the right of the screen I was completely losing the flow.

Yeah, I get those two confused - I can see the colour difference but for some reason my brain says Green = Up. Green is the main button for so many things it just seems it should be like that... :hmm:

Plus I use the d-pad anyway, so the colours are arbitrary. Might as well just be arrows. :)

Funny how marmite this is - I'm concerned (from other forum posts) that a lot of people are unable to see by the EA logo for whatever reason ??

The main complaint seems to be that the timing of this was crap in light of GH2 the week before - but I doubt that everybody bough GH2 for £65 and so this little rythm game for 800 points would be ideal.

It's a great game - I love the ambience, I love the visuals, It controls well and it costs £6 ffs !

I really didn't like this, and I like games *like* this.

The graphics are really pedestrian, like almost too realistic. If we're going to have virtual fireworks, I want them fantastically over the top, like a full screen of action in Geometry Wars.

There is no beat indication at all, which is usually present in games like this, depicted by little dots and dashes. These are crucial to begin with! I'm a rhythm game demon, but if I'm playing these lamo songs for the first time, and don't know whether it wants me to hit the note on the beat, the note afterwards or before etc, then it's no fun. Unless I learn every single song by heart, the indication of what it wants me to hit is too vague, exasperated by the whole fireworks presentation.

Also, with my limited time with the demo, I got the distinct feeling the notes it wants me to press were selected randomly, or by someone who doesn't understand music. I didn't feel like I was expected to hit the big notes, the real foundations of the melody. Just the impression I got early on, which might prove unfounded.

Also, I suspect a bit of plasma lag on this, with me only getting 'perfect' if I ignored the visual line completely! I didn't see any options or settings to prove or correct this however.

And now I'm being really picky, but why the frig did it take so long to initially load a paltry 78mb from the hard drive?

So yeah, this could be an awesome game, but the demo didn't convince me, so I'm probably not going to persevere with it. Today's gamers have enough to play without having to stick it out with mediocre games until they get fun any more!

I don't think I get lag, but I notice that I do much better if I ignore the bar and press on the beat of the music - in fact I tap my foot to the beat to keep time. That's typical of all rhythm games isn't it? I look half-way down the screen in DDR for the same reason.

Some of the fireworks ARE off the expected beat and that requires some learning, but the majority of the game (on medium at least) seems to be in time. I agree that the lack of dashed lines indicating the beat makes it harder though.

Yoshimax
13-04-2007, 03:58 PM
Dashed lines would ruin the presentation though - A nice solution migh have been a short, semi transparent line coming off the firework (could've been done as a glare effect from the point where the rocket fuse attaches) which would make it easier to align them with the bar !!!

The trial is a really poor indicator of how good the final game really is. For some reason they chose two of the weaker tunes and chose the easiest difficulty for the first level, which is more of a light introduction really and doesn't offer any challenge at all.

To those that have only played the trial, the full game is much better. The music is better, the arrows are better integrated and by completing levels, you unlock more fireworks and the screen becomes a lot busier (especially when using the x16).

How gutted was I when I found out the next game from Geometry Wars creators is a ****ing music game... and one with totally unbearable music to boot. I've been staying away from any threads about the game until downloading the demo, as soon as I saw the four arrows on the logo my heart sank.

If I catch anyone playing this at a meet I'm going to start a fight with them. I hate these games that much.

Why don't you ****ers go and learn piano and come out with your own music instead of pressing buttons to some gay-ass euro-trance. **** me.

...back to FFXI.

I love this game BUT the higher difficulties are ruined for me by the inability of the xbox 360 joypad to registar every d pad press meaning that a lot of the 'double notes' are missed.

Why are you playing with the D-Pad?

Play with the face buttons. :)

heh I struggled even when using the buttons on about the third song on hard, me and this type of game aren't a match made in heaven, still jolly good fun though.

This game really is great, ive been hammering a couple of songs now and got quite high on the leader boards, 17 for smooth operata on hard and like 50 on hall of the mountain dude, it really is addictive to try and get higher on them!

I do play with the face buttons, but for double notes using 2 face buttons at the same time is just not practical.

Yes it is - very easy with the buttons actually !

Downloaded this yesterday and it's a really fun and addictive game! Too bad I'm crap at games like this so I probably won't be racking up the gamerscore, but it's top fun and well worth the 800 points.

Even after disliking the demo, for some reason I felt totally compelled to buy this last night (ntsc-uk peer pressure strikes again!) and have to echo comments about the full game being a lot better than the demo. Odd choice of tracks in the demo if you ask me!

Anyway, was totally transfixed by it and played though all the tunes on Easy and some on Medium on my first go (thats a lot of game time for me in one sitting!). What made me laugh was that after I finished playing, there were fireworks going off outside my house (seriously!!!), so its very realistic ;)

It's also extremely efficient at agrovating morning sickness!! (much to mrs debug's displeasure).

good fun. although I dunno how the hell some of those scores have been achieved. Jebus - care to let us in on the secret? :)
I'm guessing its all in knowing when to unleash a bonus round?

Me? My scores are crap compared to Silvergun X's! According to my friends score list he is a legend.

I always feel I should be better than I am at these games because I'm a musician (or was) and have exceptional hearing (I'm not being arrogant, my son has it too) and very very good rythmn, but I actually seem to struggle on some of these rythmn games!

ChrisField

Ah, I dont have Silvergun on my friends list - you're top of all my friends scores! :) Apart from one or two when Xebu (who i dont think reads this forum!) is. Thought you seemed to know what you're doing! :) I'm pretty crap with the ryhthm and get all in a muddle when it starts getting a bit thick n fast.

Jebus

you're top of all my friends scores! :)

****in YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!

Well all I do is listen to the music if you get what I mean, the "hits" are within the rythmn of the song (obviously lol)...actually its hard to get across what I mean.

Obviously get perfect hits if you can and make sure you don't start a bonus run when the song slows down or stops.

Dunno what else to suggest to be honest! Silvergun get you're ass in here and tell the people how you got to no1 on the entire leaderboard!

Talk of an update coming soon (on MN's blogcast). No details of what's going to be included though.

What are the criteria for getting an A on Medium? I managed to get 99% hit ratio and 85% accuracy last night on Tail Light Sonata on still only got a B. Was tearing my hair out by the end of my session! :(

Jebus
24-04-2007, 10:01 AM
I think accuracy needs to be 90% +

DavidHolliss
24-04-2007, 10:59 AM
Thanks for that, I've yet to get a A on Medium, best is 100% hit and 81% accuracy.

Yoshimax

Me too - It was pissing me off being unable to A a medium track.....

Nijo
24-04-2007, 03:48 PM
I think I A**'d one of them with 100% hit and 93% accuracy.
The difference between B/C and A** seems to be very narrow....

The update for this is now out, and the Guitar Hero guitar support is ace! I assume it wasn't this way before...

You press the colour and strum to play the note, and then tilt the guitar to activate the bonus. Just as you'd want it to be, it's exactly like playing Guitar Hero!

It's well worth a try, but it'll take a lot of getting used to I think, with the colours not appearing on screen in the positions you're used to in GH.

No way didn't know about the guitar thing - that explains why Helmet was on this the other night !!!

I'll have a blast later - actually switched this on this week and it's still a good fun game to idle away 5-10 minutes.

I just got this yesterday (got an arcade compilation disc cheap) and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Much better than I remember the trial being.

Whipped through all the songs on easy (managing to beat one of Silvergun's scores - w00t) and intend to A** them all before moving on to medium.

Worth a look for anyone who missed it on release and is into Rhythm Action games with high-score addiction.

Was tempted by this originally, but never got round to buying it.
However, now I'm into GH, it appeals more: same gameplay, better (ie, not rock) music?

I've been looking at the screenshots, and I have a question for anyone: does the "layout" of the notes change if you're playing it with a guitar: eg, G/R/Y/B? I notice that they don't seem to be in that order in the screenshots, and I reckon it would get a bit confusing otherwise.

I really enjoyed the funked up classical music tracks. The sound level seems a bit quiet though. Had to crank the volume up. Haven't tried it with the Guitar yet.
