Nobody started a first play so I figured I may as well.

Hard...yet easy.

Easy because you have infinte continues, hard because some of the bosses take about 15-20 continues.

Achievements are varied enough for a small live arcade game but some look stupidly hard. I noted Kubrick has already got the flame-proof one...erm HOW????

It involves not getting fried by a boss at all which is hard since that boss only has two attacks and uses this one most.

Turtle soup involves not getting hit by Shredders ray-gun which turns you into a normal turtle...and so on, the boss achievements are all like that.

Not bad for 400pts but the game is SHORT. Just finished it in under 35 minutes, might play it again co-op but I've never been fussed about achievements for retro arcade titles.

EDIT: Can a mod please edit the title of the thread to include the missing "T"...

Hehe, the flameproof one was quite easy. You can get hit by the boss hundreds of times, so long as he doesn't shoot you with the flamethrower.

You only get 20 continues in co-op mode and there's twice as many enemies so getting the Real Ultimate Power one will be hard. I've played a couple of games and reached the level just after the skateboarding bit.

That's a joke right, only 20 continues? Each or to share?

I used nearly 20 on the flame boss!

So is it as fun as I remember, or did the limited play time inherent in coin-op games mask its true, button-mashing-whilst-holding-right nature?

Jebus
14-03-2007, 06:35 PM
Well it's not as much fun as I remember, it's much harder. You literally rely on your super move all the time.

Still, not bad for the price.

It really is button mashing though.

Hmmm... rejigged the controls to fit better with the DOA stick and started a game. within 30 seconds the buttons reset themselves to default. balls!!

Downloaded the demo tonight and let's just say childhood memories are sometimes best left alone :( It's not quite the same when you're paying 50p for the privilege in some shady seaside arcade, huh?

DavidHolliss

It's quite enjoyable, especially for just over three quid, my memory is so bad though, who is the best character to use and how do you pull off the "super move" ?

Thanks.

I'd forgotten how cheap it can be at times..but still great fun to be had, oh yes.

Question...I thought on the arcade you lost health when using the special (can't be arsed to dig my board out to check)? Or am I just getting confused with HH etc.

Edit..Press jump and attack at the same time for the special. Nunchuk and bo are my faves..got the range to suit my playing style..but its much of a muchness imo.

This is fun but it is a bit of a shoddy conversion. The graphics look a bit ropey compared to what they should be, and the presentation leaves a lot to be desired. Having said that it is not quite so bad, given that it's only 400 points.

I like it but the sound is a bit off. I hit a tire and it made a very loud distorted sound. I did the achievement where you don't get turned into a little turtle by shredder but the achievement didn't register. :(

Bad luck, the secret achievement (worth no points) is nothing special ..

Fall into a manhole 5 times.

even I could manage that at my first attempt.

Just tried the game on my 32" HD LCD and graphics are .. woeful :)

i just played the demo and 10 seconds into the game it froze. and not even the machine - just the game. the music was still going but everything was stuck. i could even press start and choose 'quit game'

wtf!

Bought and finished this tonight. It's insanely hard, humorously so at times where I found myself dying repeatedly when fighting a boss - sometimes staying alive for a few seconds before he crushed me again.

Guess it was designed to eat money and nothing else. SNES Turtles is far more balanced, if memory serves.

Gutted :(

Yeah it's stuff like that which reminds you that it's an arcade and not a console game. I find the one on the Mega Drive (hyperstone heist) a better game because the difficulty is more fair, but we'll probably see that one on the Wii's VC.

Played this, must have used up 500 lives to get past 3 acts.

There's a video on Youtube showing the whole game completed with one life !

I had really confused this and the MD one in my childhood memory (largely, I think, to them re-using some of the art assets in the MD conversion).

For example, I had forgotten you couldn't run.

Found myself trying the double tap golden axe stylee too.

Love the way you can see who on your friends list is playing it, what stage they are on and how many lives they've used - mate was on stage 3 and blitzed through 9655 lives

Played the trial game which was enough of a memory trip for me :)

Have to say I am definitely not disappointed with this overall. It’s pretty much what I expected which is fine with me. A few little issues here and there. Why the different art styles? Seeing the new movie style art for character select and border when this game is purely based on the eighties cartoon was quite jarring.

Also, there method of implementing a character select feature (which I’ll admit was obviously difficult for them as the 4 player version never had a character select screen) is also not ideal .

And why, why, why is the intro when you start the game cut short?

Despite these (admittedly small) niggles, the game is still great fun to play. Yes it is hard, but no harder than the original arcade version was. Definitely 400 MS points well spent.

Oh and no arcade operator EVER set the game to life per credit XD

when playing single player you have unlimited continues, but it shows starting as 10,000 lives, so he had used 45, cracking :)

oh yeah, now that is poor, mind, on co-op, I'd used all the 20 continues and was only halfway through stage three :(

The newsagent across from me used to have this arcade a long time ago. One day something happened that unlocked a huge number of free credits, the place was full of school kids so 4 of us took advantage but despite all those credits and having 4 players we still couldn't complete the game.

Is this version 4 players?

Just the very mention of this game brings back happy memories for me. When I was a kid and anywhere near an arcade I would be looking for this game, I loved it!

Sadly though as with most XBL Arcade games I was really disappointed when I had a go, not to say that it is now a bad game, but I think I should take off my rose tinted glasses when I`m browsing the arcade downloads. I did enjoy smashing up Bee Bop with my nunchucks though!

Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=74181) just gave it a poo. The review said he completed it in one and multi player within an hour too.

"Turtles is about as shallow as gaming gets, with even less to offer than Renegade, a game already three years old by the time this hit the arcade. It's no surprise that not long after its release Capcom released the similar yet vastly superior Final Fight, forcing Konami to try that little bit harder with its later Simpsons and X-Men side-scrollers. Already outclassed by its peers in 1989, the shortcomings of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are laid horribly bare in 2007. Within an hour of downloading the thing I'd completed it twice - once on my own, once in multiplayer co-op - and see no reason to ever go back to it again. Even at 400 points, that's pretty shoddy value."

Yeah I know what you mean re the art/border. Fortunately you can remove the border when playing the game.

Oh and no arcade operator EVER set the game to life per credit XD

Word. It was always 2 lives per credit at my local aracdes. I remember on holiday in Wales one summer I found a cab with 3 lives per credit. It felt like Christmas come early.

C'
15-03-2007, 01:52 PM
Yeah I always remember the cabs I played being set to 2 lives per credit (I guess that was the default dip setting). There was one cabinet me and my brother found on holiday in the Lake District where no matter how much we died we seemed to have another life. Never tracked how many it was but that was a good day :)

Where are the options for border and screen size? Went into the Settings Menu on the first screen but couldn't see anything :/

wheelaa
15-03-2007, 02:01 PM
Should be there iirc. Certainly if you pause the game during play and call up the options the only one you can change is the screen size.

DavidHolliss
15-03-2007, 02:12 PM
Shoju, co-op is 4 players yes.

I was looking to adjust screen size also, nothing on the main menu options, but didn't check the pause menu options tbh, hope it's there.

For the Eurogamer guy to complete both single and co-op in his first hour he must be very good and have completed the game first try, takes 10 minutes to get to stage three.

to get the 250 score acheivment, can you do this in single player? or is it multiplayer only?

Skull Commander
15-03-2007, 06:39 PM
I think the eurogamer guy just doesn't like that type of game. Also I don't see hopw it can be described as bad value at only 400 points. Thats less than the average games magazine.

Why do people keep saying this? It might be longer on MAME, but I'm almost certain the actual arcade machine was the same as the XBLA one.

C'
16-03-2007, 09:46 AM
Because the arcade machine definately had the the full, longer intro. It doesn't make any sense for it to be in MAME and not a proper arcade cabinet since MAME uses the exact same ROM data from the arcade machine.

It's so obvious something is missing as the music cuts off really abruptly.

I just don't understand why it has been done.

billy_dimashq
16-03-2007, 12:25 PM
it even cuts it when splinter says 'hang on, april!'

was a bit miffed about the intro being cut short, as the song rocks!

Goemon
17-03-2007, 01:05 AM
May well be a bug. I've watched the full intro when playing over XBL co-op.

I'm really not sure what Eurogamer were expecting from this game...For me it's everything I was expecting - a 4 player XBL co-op button basher, brimming with nostalgia and some totally plausible achievements (I've been through around 6 times now and have 10 of the 12). There is definitely a level of skill there!!

And all for a little over £3 - how can anyone complain?

Maybe it's just me...

Bada Bing!

At least you can scale it up to full screen. Some fake scanlines would really help make it look less shit though.

No, not just you. It's a lot of fun and I want to see more arcade games like this (16-bit era) appearing. Tbh, the big websites usually miss the point when reviewing XBLA games and rip them apart, irrespective of how good they still are today.

Which 2 achievements don't you have out of interest? :)

Turtle Soup - Defeat Shredder without being turned into a regular turtle.

And

Slice and Dice - Earn 250 points, individually, in an Xbox Live CO-OP game.

I've been really close to both - I reckon Slice and Dice will be a piece of cake if you only play 2 player, the foot are a bit thin with 4.

17-03-2007, 09:27 AM
the whole point of the original arcade version was being able to play a 4-player fighter with your mates. Seeing that playing online is a juddery mess, you're left with a dull, shallow fighter that's sadly showing its age :(

Skull Commander
17-03-2007, 02:21 PM
I didn't get the shreeder achievment last nite, despite not getting turned into a baby turtle.
Despite the bugs and crappy presentation I really liked this. Last night I finished it in single player then fired up turtles in time on the snes. A great evening!

Jebus
17-03-2007, 02:33 PM
I just played this online for the first time.

What a ****ing mess.

The achievements : Some only work in single player...the hidden one for example! How can a game THIS old be this slow and juddery online, just poor netcode or a case of "**** it they'll buy it"...afterwards we played Alien Hominid mini games which were hilarious and fun and smooth.

We got right up to Krang and died, I reckon we could complete it on a second try.

Skull Commander
17-03-2007, 02:45 PM
The secret achievment WILL unlock in multi-player, but only if it's not a private game. I was confused by this initially as well.

Jebus
17-03-2007, 02:48 PM
Oh...ours was a private game.

Whats the point of that then?

Kubrick
17-03-2007, 02:51 PM
Possibly to stop people inviting friends and getting achievements cheaply. Contra is the same.

Jebus
17-03-2007, 02:52 PM
I don't understand, the achievement is a hidden one and has 0 gamerscore attached to it.

What's getting achievements cheaply got to do with it, I wanna play with my mates, not some random wankers!

Kubrick
17-03-2007, 02:55 PM
As far as I know, none of the achievements unlock in a private game, not just the secret one.

You can still invite friends into a public game. ;)

So what's the difference? Why do Microsoft continually punish people for playing with their friends?

Skull Commander

So what's the difference? Why do Microsoft continually punish people for playing with their friends?
I agree. I only like playing with people I know. It's difficult to get all your friends in an open game as people keep jumping in before friends can accept the invite.

Jebus
17-03-2007, 04:59 PM
I'm just sick to death of them delivering wonderful games like Gears of War and forcing us to play random strangers to get 1000/1000. For example, in Gears I'd have nearly 1000/1000 by now if you could get them via player matches. In fact I probably would have 1000 easily.

MJ
18-03-2007, 11:03 AM
Achievements are a double edged sword. On one hand they are fun to get, like the ones in Crackdown, but on the other hand they have ruined some elements of gaming.

Not being able to play with friends irrespective of achievements is the stupidest thing ever. Roll on Halo 3 and a decent party system.

ChrisField
19-03-2007, 01:08 PM
I think that in a recent Major Nelson interview it was noted that people, on the whole, don't really like the co-op achievements and they were going to move away from them.

Jebus
19-03-2007, 01:48 PM
Nothing wrong with co-op achievements OR online achievements, it's them being ranked I despise.
