Suprised nobody has started a first play for this after all the hassle of actually managing to get it but there we go...
I get disconnected when playing the FULL PURCHASED game, making the live achievements and multi-player aspects pretty difficult to do.
I don't remember MK being this bloody hard to be honest, can't get past the 3rd fight, the controls are terribly unresponsive (D-Pad and stick) and the AI is manic and just runs at you doing 5 hit combos on the 3rd fight. I used to play this at the arcade and get through it easily. Then on the home consoles it was just as fun and easy. It was INCREDIBLY frustrating to get the flawless victory achievement but I'm happy at least that I did it. I should mention that I'm playing on the novice mode.
I was really looking forward to this, but currently...well, it feels like I've wasted my money.
It seems there really are issues with this game.
So yeah, can't comment on multiplayer since it disconnects me from live every time I play it. Also, every time I revert to the main menu it tells me "You are not connected to Xbox Live" and every time I start a game and it gets to character selection it tells me the same as well.
Seriously though, I sincerely reccommend getting the trial version before you shell out for the full game.

Thanks for that impression dude - I have grabbed the trial version, but it doesn't seem to play any harder than the original arcade version. The AI was always super hard, and if you try the same move over and over you get slaughtered. It's exactly the same here, which leads me to believe this is a pretty much direct port.
I'm undecided about getting the full game mind. I much prefered MK2 - but I do think the achievements are nicely thought out. If the online play is sorted out, I might change my mind about buying into this.

Regarding the achievements, I'd gotten 2 before I even checked out what I had to do to get them!
So either I've gotten worse at games, or my memory is shot to buggery. To be honest I couldn't remember a single fatality move anyway. I could only remember the "standard" specials as well.
Really stupid question, but someone remind me what Scorpion's "Get over here" was, because I tried what I thought it was and nothing happened.
I remember the last bosses being hard but not the rest of the characters. The one who REALLY mullered me was when Sub-Zero, I was fighting AS Sub-Zero as well. He just kept rushing me and doing 5 hits.

The AI on this is terrible - Mortal Kombat is a multiplayer only game, so I won't comment too much on this until live play becomes available.
But as far as gameplay mechanics go, this is the best MK of the lot in my opinion.
Scorpion's spear move is B, B+LP
Follow this up with a double close HP, HK, Back+HK.
This also no longer disconnects on play, so online should be working/

Oh my god, I feel like the biggest twat ever now lol.
I'm off to gamefaqs to try and "remember" some fatalities and 5 hit combos.
It also seems faster than I remember actually...

Is the title mean't to say Moral Kombat? http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/images/smilie/biggrin.gif
Just played a few games of the trial version and really enjoyed it. Definitely a tough game alright but there's something satisfying about using Scorpions spear move then delivering an uppercut.
Still seem to be able to repeatidly use back+LK (sweep) to win a few cheap hits!

Well I certainly am better now I remember how to play it properly, but I'm stuck as hell on Motaro! No specials work, can't combo, he just kills me so easily.

Since posting this 50 minutes ago, I defeated Motaro and have been stuck on Shao Kahn for 40 minutes...****ing FORTY.
Tried numerous characters and cheap ways, can't do it.
2 more goes and I give up.

...and just been playing online a fair bit, about 15/20 matches, lost only 4 or 5. Thought I was shit, turns out I'm pretty good.
Good online, only had lag twice and it wasn't my end since I had hosted about 6 games previous. Managed to get the fatality achievement (for doing a fatality against someone on live). I like to switch between Sub-Zero and Scorpion and occasionally someone else but almost everyone (with the exception of one person) sticks to the same character...SMOKE.
Silvergun X I've sent you a message (I'm AdCook), couldn't send a friend request cos your friends list is full!
Completely changed my mind about the game, well worth it and didn't take me long to get back into the swing of things.
That said, play through the main arcade game ONCE on easy just for the achievements and then stick to live play because the arcade game nearly had me snapping my controller in half on the last two bosses.
Possibly my favourite live arcade game since Cloning Clyde, which I nailed in a weekend (200/200 and shitloads of live play). I'd been waiting for this since that "Live Arcade" trailor ages back, next up on the wanted list is Sonic :)

Got the full game, the interface is lovely - Nice to see a developer making an effort to make it look like a native game (Street Fighter II just looked like a cheap emulator).
A fews complaints however: you cannot change the button configuration, the game hangs if paused for more than a minute, the difficulty is all over the place and the screen is too far to the left for some reason, as if it's overscanning which means I cannot stretch it to full screen without a lot of it being off to the left :P
If they fix these problems, it's well worth the 800 points. I'm under the impression it wasn't supposed to be released until Wednesday, but when they released it by accident (then pulled it) they realised they had no choice but to release it early - could explain a few things.

The difficult is rather strange, seems easy all the way except for the last two fights (three if you count Noob Saibot who just murders you) and I think the fourth fight (which for me was fighting myself). I found the fights inbetween very easy!
I paused the game for about 5 minutes and it didn't hang...done that a few times now  no probs! Also no probs with the screen position for me that I've noticed either!

He's popular 8)
I played some ranked matches today, 5 in total with only one laggy game. 2 x flawless in the first match then had my ass handed to me 4 times on the trot.
The question is, does anybody NOT play as smoke on this game?

They need to add a button configuration option, as it sucks on a DOA4 stick. It's quite easy though, I got two achievements the first time I played.
I play as Scorpion, and occasionally Liu Kang. TBH I only bought this because I just got 4,000 points free. I doubt it'll get a lot of play especially if they don't sort out the button options, especiallly when is MK2 better all the other MKs.

The only achievements I've not got :
100 ranked wins
10 ranked wins
Friendship in a live match
Beat Noob Saibot
I think I can get 3 of those 4 but the 100 ranked wins is never gonna happen, I absolutely LOATHE achievements like those that just reward people for playing a game over and over and over again.
This is even eclipsing Cloning Clyde as my most played arcade title.

I love UMK3 (I own the original arcadecab of UMK3), and they did a pretty good port to the 360, I've played a few online matches and it worked perfectly (no lag at all), it's just somtimes takes some time to actaully find someone to fight against, and sadly most quit after one fight....
I can play with most characters, but I do prefer: SubZero, Cyrax, Smoke, Stryker and Scorpion.
only downside to the game on 360 is the horrible horrible HORRIBLE controller !!!!
I really need a decent controller to play games like DOA4 and MK3, the 360 controller is perfect in almost everyway, just that controlpad is horrible.

The online mode is bloody difficult, I always end up against people spamming the same combo over and over, and as soon as I figure out how to get out of it (2nd/3rd game) they quit and never play me again :P
Reptile (my favorite) seems really weak in comparison to most other characters.

Okay, educate someone who doesn't really know too much about MK (other than playing it a fair bit in 'the day')!
What does UMK3 have that MK Trilogy does not? I remember the big fuss about UMK3 coming out on the Saturn but not the PS1 (and it never did come out on the PS1 did it?), but the PS1 got MK Trilogy a whole year before it finally hit the Saturn.
When MK Trilogy finally did hit the Saturn in late '98, the general attitude was that there was no point if you already had UMK3.

Amazing, I bought a Live arcade title, and its actually pretty entertaining. I think what I like about this game is the crappyness of the characters and the awesome speech. The front end is pretty good as well.

back then, the PS1 had MK3 , but just after MK3 was released they released UMK3 in the arcade and short after for Saturn, UMK3 had more characters and most important you could start combos with jump and punch, so the fighting mechanisme of UMK3 was (much) better and faster as in MK3.
but in the end PS1 got the best version of MK ever made, Trilogy, it had the fighting mechanisme of UMK3 and it had all characters that have ever been in a MK game. So Trilogy is the best most complete of the series, and in Trilogy you could do a brutality.
After they went to 3D and I never liked that much.
Right I got this the other day and absolutly crap at this.
All I want to know is if anamalities are in this because I haven't been able to do one yet.

I really hated the computer AI from MK1 to UMK3
First few battles no problems then suddently it gets frustratingly hard with the CPU seemingly able to counter every move

yes, in UMK3 you can do animalities,
but playing with the 360 controller it's a pain in the ass to actually pull off the fatalilties, animalties etc.

the AI is indeed very unfair, it's best played in VS mode.

Got this game yesterday and I tell no lie...apart from an hour stint on the new Tony Hawk's demo, its all I’ve played this weekend. :xd: This is another release which would only appeal to the fans and the people who grew up during the heyday of the Mortal Kombat series. It’s a great addition to the XBLA library, Mortal Kombat was one of the games that could be considered to be the sound of the arcades back in the early 90's. Loading it up for the first time, I had a massive grin on my face.
Mortal Kombat 2 and 4 was probably my most played of the MK games, but Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in my opinion had the edge over 2 in that it was much faster and there is a bigger scope to do "Kombos" with the new combo system and the run feature. It is also easily one of the most daftest MK games to ever be released, with some fantastically daft Fatalities and characters such as Nightwolf and Stryker...who never looked cool back in the 90's and they still don’t now.
There were a few cast members from MK2 such as Baraka, Raiden and Johnny Cage and most notably was Scorpion. Fans of him had to make do with Robot Ninja Cyrax with his similar net grab move, but it wasn’t the same. :( They added him back in UMK3 though. Heh, I can just imagine the meeting they had making MK3
<Tobias>Right...we have run out of colours for making clone ninjas, we need a new angle. But what the hell could be cooler than ninjas?! :(
<Boon> ...ROBOTS!
<Tobias> YES
<Boon> Wait wait WAIT!...Stay with me now...NINJA...ROBOTS!
<Tobias> IN MY MOUTH PLEASE...THRICE.
The whole game just looks even more hilarious now, and it’s just so nostalgic. I can remember this game and MK1 and 2 so vividly during my school days. the VS screens, the Fatality jingle, the character select, the music, the sound effects, TOASTY, the Kombat Kodes, the Stage Fatalities....ahhhh. ^_^
I've been playing it with no problems online, it’s been such a great laugh. XD Tis ccary how I can still remember some fatalities, Kombos and other stuff with certain characters, and then **** all with another. :) Best part of Mortal Kombat that is still alive with XBL is like in the good old days, BEFORE the internet (!) is how the game still maintains the panic of trying to enter a hastily remembered Fatality and the sheer disappointment everyone feels when the mess up. Loads of "ARGGHHH", "Awwwww", "SHIT", "...er...er...ER...****" and "ioldnfldsnflkdsn *sigh*" ^_^
I remember sitting with my mates at home, all scrambling for the copy of Nintendo Magazine System\Super Play\Games Master guides with all the moves and fatalities in them, and most of the time everyone always used to mess up. Reciting the Fatality combination throughout the match, and when you get the chance to do it...your brain freezes. X) GOOD TIMES. ^_^
Ah, heres the SUPREME DEMONSTRATION of every Fatality, Bababilty, Friendship and the mostly ASS Animalalities in UMK3. God...most of these are SOOOO BAD.

Along with Doom and Lumines this is one of the best live releases yet. Ah...the memories of playing this in the student union arcades between lectures all those years ago (that was MK2).
It plays great online and has a healthy number of players to spar with.
My one negative would be some subtle control issues, like how the game won't buffer your current joystick input after the start of a fight. Anyone know if that was in the arcade version coz I don't remember it being an issue.
Unfortunately my memory is bad and I've forgotten allot of moves, hence why I ordered this today from Amazon:

excellent, I never thought of looking for a book like that (didn't think they would still be available) When I bought the arcade cab of UMK3 I've made my own book with the moves and fatalities with stuff I could find from gamefaqs, I'm still missing a few moves and fatalities from a few characters....
maybe you could help filling these blank spots ? ...

Anyone still play this?
I've only just figured out what the name Noob Saibot means - its backwards for tobias/boon. Wow. 12-year mystery solved for me.
I've actually managed to kick the sucker's ass finally, but only got the achievement for it... it didn't unlock him as a secret character or anything. Same with ermac (but minus the achievement). Are they kidding me with this shit? I had to go through the trauma of playing it multiple times just to get "a chance to fight one of shao kahn's greatest warriors?". This is bullshit. I assume "teh Kodes" are the only way to access the secret ninjas? Also came across Sub-Zero from MKII and Human smoke, but they weren't unlocked either. What gives?
Also, when I played the mega drive version of this way back in the 90's, I seem to remember there being more characters, more stages and even brutalities. Was that another game?

But I'm sure there was something on the mega drive as well. I'm 100% positive about this, because I've never played an MK game on either the n64 or the ps1. I do remember brutalities, Rain, Jonny Cage, Raiden in an MK game (obviously post MKII) on the sega console. I think it was ultimate... but its not the same as this 360 version. Is it possible there were some differences between the SNES and the Mega Drive versions of UMK3?
Also, is Rain in UMK3 (360 version)?

Well it turns out we got a port of the arcade version, not the SNES or Mega Drive versions - I presume its got something to do with licensing, otherwise its pretty retarded, considering how superior they are to the arcade version.
http://www.mortalkombatonline.com/content/games/umk3/
In other words, in the 360 version there's no Rain, no Noob Saibot, no Brutalities whatsoever, no Motaro and no Shao Kahn (though I don't really care for the last two). Interestingly, none of the UMK3 versions had Jonny Cage, Raiden or Baraka.
I'm pretty disappointed to be honest. Sort of regret spending 800 points on it now. I had hoped we'd have gotten the mega drive version (which I thoroughly enjoyed back in 90's), but not quite the case. Just a port of the crappiest version of the game. Ultimate indeed.

Hmm... the idea of having my ass handed to me in online match after getting constantly obliterated by the cheating computer as well as the frustration of crappy controls and the disappointment of getting a cheap version of one of the greatest fighters of all time - is a little sadistic to be honest with you. :s
I like it! :thumb:
Will come online early next week, as I have to get a wireless adaptor for the 360 on Monday. I suppose it might be wise to train a little beforehand...
