Two fairly large maps.

Controls took some getting used to, but do the job.

Graphics are excellent, but I do get some screen ripping. Really crisp looking game! Brilliant! Has a totally different feel than games from western developers.

Gameplay is for me, pure capcom class. But it won't be to everyones' taste. I'm getting some resis 4 flash backs. Can't put my finger on what it is yet.

Only played for a short while, so back to it!

My first impressions are of a game that I will certainly be buying!

Sooooooooooperb

Just had a quick crack on both missions (finished neither).

Graphics are fantastic - very, very crisp as Capcom stated - the snow is superbly done and some of the explosions are to die for. Controls (aiming in particular) do take a bit of adjusting but once you're in :D

There's a nifty thing like the Magnetic device Lara has in the new tomb raider which you can use to rappel to higher areas, good few weapons in the demo, had a shot in the mech (or VS as they seem to be called) and it was interesting - a bit of a shit mech to be honest but I reckon there's at least one more in the demo (at the end of the second mission).

Loving it - definately a buy for me - I know what you mean about the Resi4 vibe CS - I was getting it when fighting the big boss thing for the first time in the warehouse - ran upstairs and was taking it from there - very reminiscent of the barn fight against the head of the village in RE4 !!!

Just played it too and agree - it seems excellent. Got to the end I guess of the 1st mission, against the boss with an energy bar. Seemed like a good long demo and only 1 part out of 2. Despite the "unfinished code" warnings it runs smooth enough for me and looks fantastic.

Its Rocks BIGTIME.

Not only is a riot to play the graphics are the best thing I've ever seen, my eye's went into meltdown playing this. The Explosions are the best you’ll ever seen anyway , much like the texures on display

it is everything i wanted

i am officially in love with this game

i love running towards the camera and spraying bullets at the enemies infront/behind me

i could cry about the amount of time we have to wait for the full game though...

First things first. The Capcom logo at the start was a sight to behold on the 360.

The controls and movement was very “Resident evil”. Wasn’t as smooth as I wanted, bit to wooden.

The graphics are top notch tho.

I don't even know where to start, the game is so amazing. It looks fantastic, and the sound is awesome, all the little effects go together to really make it feel freezing cold. Just finished the Hive mission, not sure I want to play the other yet, there's so long to go until the full release, I need to make this last.

Glad to hear that it's up to scratch though. Is the demo very long?

Played the first mission. Fun, but could have been a bit faster and more visceral. Shame you can't put craters in the snow as well. And need to sort the controls out so right-stick-click is zoom and not up on the d-pad (maybe that's an option?).

Potential, have to see where it goes.

It sure looks lovely, that first demo was a bit too slow for my liking.

The animation is lovely, the explosions and bug splatter looks terrific.

I'm suprised by how impressed I actually am, I thought it looked a bit naff when I saw the first trailer. Also it runs silky smooth

This is very good, love the metroid style feel and weak points to the monsters. Also like the way the snow is at different depths, sometimes you are running along, other times you are wading through up to your waste.

I do find the button layout a little backward, nothing game breaking as the movement and aim are all spot on. Just feels like everything is in the wrong place and takes some getting used to.

Quite amazing how fast you can adapt isn't it!

Beat the first level. Get wiped out at the end of the second. The game is superb. I'm stikcing to my first thoughts of it reminding me of Resi4. Even the first boss had me thinking back to El Giante.

Does anyone know if the dev team worked on the last Resi?

Yep, this one is getting a buy. A top demo too.

The visuals are just sublime. When you are zoomed in, and get up to you character's model, the fur coat is amazing! They must been using some high rez textures, as the game is so sharp.

This feels next gen.

Played it earlier on, top stuff. Graphics are sublime with the best explosion effects yet seen. Game play is a blast and tbh reminds me quite abit of gun valkyrie of the xbox for some reason. Mechs are great fun to. Can`t wait for this now :D

The speed of the aiming is adjustable via the pause->options er, option.

Very nice looking game, lots going on very intense at times too, the first big spider thing killed me pretty fast though :/ Finding it quite tricky presently.

Both levels finished. :)

Absolutely ****ing brilliant, is all I have to say.

Just superb. That first level was sublime. I adore the way you can pull off the weapons from the mech aswell. :) Just jump out, yank it's arm off and carry around a huge gatling gun. BRILLIANT!

this is definitely the best demo yet and my favourite 360 game so far

what i found quite cool (and its a really small thing) is the way that explosive barrels don't explode straight away, you can move them towards enemies with the machine gun before they explode. nice little tactic.

the AI on the humans isn't spectacular but is friggin solid and they provide a nice load of fun. shame there is only one model of each enemy type, could do with some variety

I agree. :) I've finished the demo and i'm still playing it over and over.

The second part of the second level, where you go through the big door and you fight the Leader VS there.

I can't get enough of just yanking the shotgun off the VS and causing carnage with it! It just looks so brilliant doing that!

This is the most I've played a demo in a long time. I just find the game mechanics really satisfying.

Had fun shooting the legs off the first boss creature, then found the shotgun attachment for the mech. Now I could attach it to the mech, but why would I want to do that when I can run around on foot with one of the biggest bad ass shotguns in any game.

Dezm0nd
10-05-2006, 11:36 AM
I weren't feeling this one at all sadly, slow paced action with repetitive enemies doesn't do it for me. The AI was awful, they just kept running around me, the bigger enemies looked impressive but they all had the same "metroid" weak spot, on the tail.

Looked good with some nice effects but this is what the next gen is about, moving on. it's just a shame the gameplay isn't moving with the graphics

I was also very impressed, it's nothing we haven't seen before (gameplay), but what it does, it does with a bang, and keeping in mind that they still have a long way to go (next winter) before release, things only should get (even) better.

I really like this one

Another one very impressed with this demo... has said above, not hugely innovative gameplay but the on foot / mech mechanics handle so smoothly that it doesn't become and issue. Looks as good as chocolate covered breasts and handles just as sweet :) really looking forward to this one!!

+1 for Lost Planet love.

I've finished the first demo level but not quite done the second.
It's excellent and i do also see the RE4 and Metroid similaritys.
People have to remember that this is a work in progress with 6 months left to go.
It very impresive at this stage of development. The Ai is a bit fuzzy and there are several other issues but it just a demo remember. Im sure final product will kick serious ass.
The animation in particular is unparalled IMO.

really like the demo, definetly feeling a bit of gun valkyrie mixed with resi 4. out of interest does anyone know what the little control antennas do. Is it to save your progress or do they work as a weapon.

hopefully Capcom will inject a bit of varety into the dodge shoot tail mechanic and keep us all on our toes. is it this winter or next, either way can't wait.

They heat up your suit mate. You need energy to stay warm. The counter goes down, and if it's empty I think you freeze. These points and orange gloop, charge up your suit.

I think that's it. But I haven't let mine run out yet.

PS, played some more last night, the game really rewards you for repeat play! I found it hard as nails first time, now I'm a mecha ninja!

Excellent!!

Mine ran out once and you freeze in the same manner as the creatures do when you kill them. You also use the same energy to recharge your health, thats what caught me out.

Lost Planet reminds me somehow of Blue Stinger, my first Dreamcast game. but unfourtunately my first euphoria about the great visuals and action going on didn't last long :(

my issues so far: environment interaction is very limited, no physics at all, enemy AI is dull, transitions between stages are clumsy and the lot of bitmap explosions are heavily overdone for my taste.

Pft and pah, I say. Some people are never happy. You might criticise the workmanlike gameplay, but in nearly every other regard this is so far away from current-gen it's untrue.

It's nothing like Blue Stinger - you don't run like you've cacked your pants for a start.

mate, i didn't say it's like Blue Stinger. also, what's so far away from current-gen apart from the jump in visual fidelity? where are the next-gen physics, object interaction (you can't even shoot windows) and AI?

but of course i understand that everyone has its own vision of "next gen". so everyone being happy with this demo must not take my criticism personally.

Fair do's.

I hadn't thought about the physics etc, as I was having too much fun! So I guess it does boil down to personal tastes. Not being able to shoot out all the windows was not high on my "What's missing" list.

Better enemy AI would be welcome, but we will see. Plenty of time left before the game is finished.

Well considering the knowledge that this demo was available pushed me into buying a 360 (plus I now have a TV worthy of the next gen) there was quite a lot riding on it being good. Thankfully its pretty large, still not completed either section mainly because I’m trying to see what can be done and getting peppered up in the process. I like the prompted interaction for a demo - digging guns out of the snow, ripping a weapon of the side of a mech - but hope that this is only included in the first level of the finished game. Show us what’s possible then let us get on with it. Haven’t spent much time using the grapple hook thing yet, but imagine that will be key later. See that some barrels roll around and expect they can be grabbed and used some how. The visuals are stunning as are the sounds. Love the game over screen, dying in front of a mech brings back memories of Ed-209s violent introduction and that first boss is one ferocious ****er. This will be played to death. AI is a bit hit and miss, spent ages running around inside a bunker with one of the snow pirates, which was more comedic than threatening but its stuff like that which makes it fun. Blowing shit up and driving a mech is simply fun and I’m glad that the 360 has some of that on offer along with its realist warfare games. If this has a LiVE feature it should rule in my house.

I'm impressed. My fears that this would be a Japanese developer simply ticking the box of 'game to keep MS happy' were clearly unfounded. The setting, intensity and fidelity are astounding.

I don't believe every game needs to have Havoc physics and entirely destructable scenery. Halo doesn't and is no worse for it.

Much of the demo reminds me of Halo: a linear path through open environments; limited weapon selection requiring strategic choice; regenerating health requiring use of cover; the concept of 30 seconds of fun repeated.

What's very interesting about this title is that you have clear elements of Western game design mixed with Japanese flair and economy. And thus far it seems very successful.

You'll be saying you can't flush toilets next. And the AI seemed reasonable enough to me - they roll out the way, they jump towards you, they bob and weave, they throw and try to evade grenades - it's supposed to be a shooting gallery.

well, i had fun too. and still have it.

"shooting out windows" isn't on my next-gen key-feature list as well but i generally love to experiment a lot in games and when i come across such relict-like flaws they somehow negatively influence my feeling of actually "being in this world". what i expect from "next gen" is better involment in to the virtual story/world through life-like environements and smart AI.

but like most of you, i still think the game has a lot of potential left.

Another route to tackle the second mission.

Step one.

http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/6766/hpim1767large5ni.th.jpg (http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hpim1767large5ni.jpg)

From the starting point, notice where my gun cursor is pointing to? That is the 'gap' between the ledge and the snow. From here, either take out the few soldiers near the barrels on the left near the start or crouch behind the slab that is facing upright in the snow and dash near the ledge.

Step two.

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/1773/hpim1768large0lf.th.jpg (http://img45.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hpim1768large0lf.jpg)

Now, I am facing the 'gap' that you can use the anchor to reach the ledge above where the mech, rocket-stations and soldiers are standing around waiting for you to peek your head out for them. Just line the character up to the position I am aiming at then fire the anchor (Y).

Step three.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1905/hpim1769large4ho.th.jpg (http://img191.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hpim1769large4ho.jpg)

Fly my darling, fly!

I am quite proud of this image because it is difficult to take a moving image on my digital camera; notice the blur thus I have launched the anchor. You might have to have a few attemps but if you follow my guide-lines, you should be fine.

Step four.

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/6981/hpim1770large4aw.th.jpg (http://img45.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hpim1770large4aw.jpg)

The route is completed.

During this section, you can do so many different things to change the situation of the area. Below are many photographs demostrating how bloody good the game is as well as the next two showing the easy way to get the mech so early in the mission; just zoom in twice with the Rifle and aim for the head thus the mech is yours!

Sniper Elite.

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/9509/hpim1772large3xv.th.jpg (http://img401.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hpim1772large3xv.jpg)

Another route to tackle the second mission.

Nice one ET, that route is just unfair - but tonnes of fun. Love jumping into a gun tower while in the mech then raining down hell on all around.

It has a hero called Wayne, what more could you ask for ;)

The more rediculous the story the better I think. Just leave out the adolecents with emotional issues that exist in far to many JRPGS.

Had a good play around with the grapple hook now and its one of the things I hope they spending some time on over the next year. The jump he does only seems useful when trying to reach a high up ledge, of which there are a limited amount of actual useful objects that can be scaled - I would love it if they gave all objects a surface on which you can stand instead of being very selective with it. But using the hook as a means of quickly getting to cover is negated by this post grapple leap during which animation frames you can take quite a beating. I would prefer it if you had to hit jump yourself, then the grapple hook could be used more as a dash attack/evade. I would also like to see it used while in the mech for fast exits and entrances.

The other problem I have is with the edges of the landscape - invisible walls that you can't pass but enemies can. When one of the large bugs went rolling off the edge I wanted to follow it down in my mech giving it a good hammering as we fell.

Love this game! Jumped off the bridge in my mech just before the first section boss for a little look see, it gets pretty busy down there :)

I know I'm bit late, but due to exam revision only had a chance to play it today. Before the demo, I was intrigued by the title but not really too excited by it; it certainly looked good, but I was looking at Sony's big next gen Capcom exclusive (DMC4) and wishin Microsoft had signed something similar....

However after playing it, I think this definately has the "wow" factor format-excusives need, and that many games todayare lacking. I'm so so surprised at how much I enjoyed it, and I'm extremely frustrated that it could be 9-12 months before it gets released!

I have to say that Marketplace is now my Favourite Thing Ever

Done the first mission which was pretty cool, have failed once on the second one when I got surrounded big time!

Controls are almost spot-on - the grapple as mentioned above isn't very well implimented though. They need to be careful not to break the game, but it'd be nice to be able to fire it while falling to add to the freedom, and even some spidey-style swinging.

To add to the mix of GunValkyrie, Resi4 and Mech Warrior2, I'd like to throw in Freedom Fighters. Very similar :)

Just finished the second mission, not as tough as I was expecting :p

Hope there is more to the game than the demo suggests. It's good but not incredible imo, and I stand by my Freedom Fighters comment - the combat feels exactly the same (no bad thing, but it feels limited). That said, there were some very nice set-pieces, it has a great scale and the graphics are nice (though again, a little disappointing after some of these comments!).

Best demo on Live so far though, and I'll certainly play through few more times :)

Personally I hope they don't add too much to further complicate the game, currently this is a simply play experience that harks back to years past. Thats why I look at it as a 3D Gunstar Heroes, its simple fun.

Knowing Capcom they will probably leave the Grapple as awkward as it currently is and force the player to adjust. You're spot on with the Spidey ref, the desire to use that hook to swing around is pretty strong. I wanted to get the Mech using it too :D At the end of the day we will probably just have to except that its a way of getting on roof tops and thats it. I still hold out hope that the finished version will allow you to pull barrels etc towards you with it as well as pull you towards stuff. It has potential to be a wicked device...

Oh shit, just released. Its my need for it to be the Metroid Prime Grapple Hook >_< Man that took me ages. Think I shall just go and play that for a bit, Lost Planet owes a great deal to its mechanics. If the avatar was Samus...

The boss keeps kicking my ass on the first stage though, anyone else have small hiccups with him, and oh, can I ride the car type thing in his lair??

Makes me so glad I have a 360, games like these.

The last section of the second level is awesome. Total mech kick-off madness.

Also noticed something new at the start of the second level, if you fall off the ledge with the barbed wire fence on the left he automatically saves himself with the grapple hook - nice little touch.

Aye, the mech battle at the end of mission 2 is total madness... Wee rocket launcher to the face of the nearest mech then a sprint to the spare mech to your right, then let total destruction commence... blends the on foot to mech sections wonderfully, cant even imagien what the final game will look and feel like but it is gonna be GREAT!!

Mate, that section is a wicked training ground for getting the grapple hook working as an evade/dash device. The post-hook-jump is still annoying but I'm getting used to it more now. Need to find a way to cancel it ;)

Been dipping in and out of this a lot, damn 360 is user friendly innit!!! :)

The 360 is a piece of gaming heaven... how Sony are gonna better the live application I dont know, oh wait, I do... they wont :p

It is great just being able to nip into the demo whenever you feel like it, especially when the demo is of such high quality!!

http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/images/smilie/cool.gif Yeah.. it sure brightens-up the 360 gaming scene.

This is the only 360 game that has impressed my brother and mates. The graphics are not only technically good, but the imagination and detail put into everything is pure class. There is something solid about the environments, and the way everything works together to make a gripping experience.

I didn't expect a Japanese company to put so much effort into a 360 title, but Capcom have really created something special. The final product will certainly be a must have. Microsoft need to promote this game as much as possible, I can't imagine anyone not being impressed by the snow and all the effects!

I haven't have so much fun on a multi-player game in absolutely years.

While the demo only offers an elimination and team elimination mode as well as two maps Pirate Fortress and an extra map along the lines of Dilphination (sp?), the amount of un to be had is offered in spades.

While the elimination mode is a standard deathmatch affair, the amount of variable weapons available ranging from small to epic as well as two mechs to stomp around in (one on each map) makes it extremely brilliant.

The first map is very similar to the outdoor environment that is made available in the E3 demo back in May where you infiltrate a Pirate Fortress (which is the name of the map) so I managed to get to the grips with the area better than most players.

My first game involved six players trying to hunt and kill one another as well as getting the data posts up to allow the radar to detect nearby enemies. The game lasted 10 minutes and went by so quick simply because I was having too much fun.

The best mode is obviously the team based effort where it makes fantastic use of the extra map (Dilphination) as the amount of hiding spaces and areas where you can lure one player to an area where you are greeted upon the whole bunch of the opposite team is fantastic.

The water valleys in that particular map has underground tunnels to get from one end of the map to the other much quicker and you may even pick-up a few epic weapons along the way such as the homing missiles (I was laughing in joy the first time I used that!), plasma gun (purple after effect) and the usual heavy shotguns and gatling guns.

The weapons simply make the game that extra bit more special because they put a smile on your face unlike most games of the type these days.

The two mechs available are new (as far as I am concerned). The mech on the Pirate Fortress is a homing missile launcher and is slow to move around but has enough firepower to blow a group of people away and to their death.

The other on the Dilphination map is amazing; it jumps once then has some kind of extra boast to chuck you higher in the air and glide down to the nearest surface. The rocket launcher is different from the E3 demo and is a lot faster too.

What pleases me most of all is that the E3 demo (single player) has some of the finest graphics on the Xbox 360 and is carried over to the multi-player in style. While there is some noticeable slowdown when you have two mechs and over half a dozen players on the same screen, the game is very smooth and there isn't any issues with the players lagging all over the place.

My last game was a 3 vs. 6 team elimination match for 10 minutes and we won by 8000 points because the other team didn't realise that the water valleys lead to tunnels which we made great use of to get from one area of the map to the other. I like how the data posts actually help win the games too.

If this demo is anything to go by then I will be playing this all year in 2007.

Had one brief game last night and thought it was aces. Took a bit of acclimatising after solid gears play (seemed clunky in comparison) but once you're in the groove it's great fun.

The graphics still look tremendous and with 10 players I didn't see any lag - I noticed at the end of the match it showed everybodies country flags - 8 UK, 1 Italy, 1 Netherlands - Hopefully a sign that when pairing it'll do its best to localise.

FWIW, I quite liked this, I think it'll prove to be decent alternative to Gears and I like how Capcom have left the controls entirely customizable (Press BACK in-game) in the demo too, since I found moving the weapon a bit sluggish at first.

Once the NTSC-UK boyz get on this, it'll be another good un' for sure.

Aye only pity was we couldn't get a wee game between us last night.

One thing I like that I don't (think) was in the SP demo was that when you jump off a high ledge you automatically rapel using your hook - very nice :)

Butting people in the face with the gun was also top fun and seeing rockets flying into mechs :D

Gonna be a top fun team game methinks.

The weapon handling seems slick i.e. the zooming and the sensitivity just seemed spot on.

I may preorder this on the strength of this pleasant little multiplayer demo.
