View Full Version : The Final Fight trilogy

I suppose it's not really a trilogy if you include Revenge & Mighty...
Anyway, are you a lover or a hater? Personally, I still love FF - wandering around piledriving goons & eating ham is still an immensely satisfying way to spend an hour or two.
Don't recall much about part 2 though & have never played part 3 - any impressions much appreciated :)

Never played part 3, really would like to get my hands on a copy at some point.
Final Fight 1 and 2 are pretty much the same game TBH. Number 2 wasn't exactly a massive leap forward in terms of gameplay. The original remains one of the finest scrolling fighters ever created. Only Golden Axe 2: Revenge of Death Adder beats it IMO.

Final Fight 2 was multi player on the SFC which the 1st wasn't but it just doesn't seem right. The audio is tinny and characters seem smaller or at least thinner. It's still a good game but nowhere near as good as the original. I used to play as Maki (Guy's sister from what I remember). Final Fight 3 was pretty dull from what I remember. I don't even think Code was in that.

Nope, Cody was missing from 3, but Guy and Haggar were present.

Love it got Final Fight One from someone here this morning, what a pimp version.
Id say its the deffinative mainstream home version (X68 prolly actual best) , ok so the Mega CD has a neat AST, but the GBA version wins out in all other areas.

FF2 isn't a bad game- but it lost a lot of the colour and style of the original. It really was a half-hearted effort by Capcom- and there is no way they would have released it in to arcades as it's just too dull.
Chun Li is in it though- eating noodles in a background cafe! http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/images/smilie/cool.gif
http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/finalfight/ff2-2.png
As you can see, it has a washed-out look to it. For some reason the vibrant colourful art style wasn't carried over to the Snes sequels. FF3 is also blighted by this- leaving the original as the best looking and most exciting.

I'd agree that Final Fight 2 is the weakest of the series, and that includes FF Revenge. 2 feels souless compared to the first game and the character roster stinks. Maki was pretty daft and the less said about Carlos the better, what a shmuck.

Well alot more cash would have been thrown at the First Final Fight game compared to the others, due to it being an arcade game i guess, so that why is probably kicks the other 2 games arses, alot more time was probably taken over the 1st one too
Final Fight you say? :) Love it to bits.
Never ever played 2 or 3, but I played 1 plenty in the arcade, (one of the games shops in our town used to have a Final Fight machine that was set for 10p a go, and this was well into the £1-a-go arcade machine days).
I've been playing Final Fight One on GBA for the last couple of months, which led to a few goes on MAME 'original' Final Fight, (with my super-ace Hori RAP). FF One is fantastic, if I'm ever in a bit of a gaming slump I know I only have to get to the subway and here the dooooo-doo-doo-dooooooo.... doo-doo-doo-doo-doooo-doooo-dooooooo music and I'm back on track. Acest of all is that I'll be able to play it on a GBA micro in a few months :) :)
Final Fight is one of my perfect games. The whole thing exudes a coolness that other games can't, umm... exude.
Nearly forgot, one of the gamefaqs FAQs for final fight is an absolute classic. Go here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/game/471041.html and look at the SkedarJanitor one, (sorry, gamefaqs don't like direct linking).

Yeah.. the original was obviously made by devoted geniuses- whilst the snes follow-ups were handed to less talented people.
It's a shame because follow-ups could have been excellent if done with the same passion. You would have thought with the success of no1 that Capcom would have at least made an arcade sequel- very strange!

amazing, who cannot love this game?
recently been playing the http://www.dcevolution.net/ homebrew Beats Of Rage collection including two Final Fight games where you can also play as Chun Li, Guile, Fei Long and DeeJay (MAXIMUM!) and it's dope, there's also another game in there with Guy in.
Anyway, Final Fight what a classic, got to love that game. I can remember never being able to get past the second boss on SNES until I suddenly realised the tactic and went on to pummel the whole game :)
I love FFOne too, the cutscenes are quality too, playing as the Alpha characters is the best!
I like Maki too, well in SFA at least

Final Fight Superplay (ftp://tekken:tekken@maximi.mine.nu/...appe/FFight.WMV) (148MB)
The dude completes the game without getting hit.
Emulator abuse no doubt, but still pretty cool. Download speed wasn't the greatest when I grabbed it though.

Another tribute to the big FF, absolutly love this game, easily in my top 10 games of all time. I remember years and years ago drooling over the super famicom version in Mean machines, sadly never bought a snes at the time so my first taste of fist action (oooh argh!) bar the coin-op was final fight one on the gba,t'was great but i was dissapointed to see that the pal version was still cenceored and some punk plank named 'billy' had replaced the stocking clad laaaidez of the original! Still after picking up a super famicom this week, even after all these years Final fight, jpn version natch, will be one of the first 3 games i buy for it.The other 2 being Area 88 and Axaley.:-)

Final Fight 1 is legendary, The SNES/SFC-only sequels are mediocre at best and the less said about Revenge & Streetwise, the better. Mighty wasn't dreadful but it wasn't brilliant, either.
Best conversion of FF1 imo would probably be the Sharp X68000 version - according to Capcom (apparently), The Sharp X68000 architecture was as close as they ever got to working on a home version of a CPS-1 board, which would probably also account for the excellent X68000 conversion of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. Final Fight One on the GBA is pretty good too, with neat touches like the artwork and Zero Guy/Cody.
Final Fight CD is a Mega-CD classic, but the voice acting is pretty awful. The soundtrack makes those legendary tunes sound like a mediocre soft-rawk album at times.

There's a great article on the whole FF series over at Classic Gaming (http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/finalfight/finalfight.htm). It covers the main trilogy, plus Revenge and Mighty. It also covers the differences between the SNES/M-CD and GBA versions of the original, including the censorship.
I'm awaiting the arrival of an NTSC-J copy of Mega CD Final Fight. And I can't wait....

The X68000 version of Final Fight was as good as arcade perfect - probably closer than the Mega-CD version. I've only ever seen it run once myself and that was a hell of a long time ago, tbh. Capcom also did SFII:TWW for the X68000 and that was supposedly the best conversion they ever did.
I guess you could Google it, but I haven't been able to find pictures of it myself.
A good-condition copy of it would have to fetch a damn good price as it never saw the light of day outside Japan, surely?

Final Fight is a hella deep game that seems to vary with gameplay across platforms. Has anyone noticed how the game differs with playability with each version? It's like the home versions of Sunset Riders, none seemed to emulate the original properly. That being said the X68 version seems to be the closest. Ever since finding out about the infinite punch trick I've wanted to try and perfect it, without success :(

Bigup FF, the rest are shit in comparison tbh. The only other walk-alongs that come close or exceed it are Captain Commando, The Punisher, AvP. Also check out Vendetta on Mame too, I think this game was 4 player, its really kool when you take out a boss in bullet time :) . Konami went through a phase of chucking out nuff licensed walk alongs but they gameplay wasnt close. Xmen (6 player?) Simpons and I think 3 different Ninja turtles games.

Captain Commando is a great game and has an excellent PSone conversion. Aliens Vs. Predator is absolute quality, pity it never got a home conversion (and no, the shocking SNES version doesn't count!). Never played The Punisher.
As for the 4 player Konami games, I loved the original Ninja Turtles and Turtles in Time. The Simpsons arcade game is absolute class in 4 player. Especially the mini-games between levels. I've never seen the 6player cabinet version of X-Men, I have played it on a 4p cab though. And Vendetta is a bit crap really, but still good fun.

Another thumbs up for Final Fight, one of the games we spent soooo long on the MCD and arcade playing, alongside SoR and SoR2.
I may be about to commit some form of sacrilege though. I prefer the original arcade BGM over the MCD AST any day.
Did enjoy all the FF references in the SFZero series though, from the characters and backgrounds right through to even nicking the music :D

I might be throwing myself to the wolves here but I always preferred Streets of Rage II to Final Fight.
Sor2 is kool, but it always looks like a console game (albeit, a very good one) comapred to FF which was pure arcade street ;)
Konami games were kool but they could never match Capcom for gameplay which is what prevents me re-visiting them.

Same here. Whilst FF has the massive sprites and a real arcadey feel to it (even on home consoles), the animation is poop and the playablilty is a little lacking I find. I know scrolling beat'em'ups are largely about pressing the same button/doing the same move ad nauseum, but at least the SoR series forces you to do a variety of moves in order to 1cc it, whereas FF doesn't (and has too few moves anyway imo). And the SoR games have a much better music hands down.

Just to pipe in that X68k version is a wonder, see the ahem...rom for details.
As for SoR music vs FF.......hmmm......whatever the case some of the Final Fight music is great, particularly the first stage which is more iconic than anything SoR, despite its quality, delivers.

Damn you, you fookers! I've just bought a mint JAP copy of Final Fight One (GBA) because of all this talk... I'm not supposed to be spending willy-nilly I'm just about to move to a new house (and all the expense that entails). Good news is, I only paid 11 quid including postage. Let's hope it's not a pirate version when I get it....
Now, have I done the right thing getting the JAP version, as I don't like the sound of censorship in the UK/US versions?

Cheers SuperDanX! It just turned up today. I played it on the train home. I found it moderately more difficult on normal than say my memories of Double Dragon arcade (which I could beat on 1 credit after some practise).

As I mainly play as Haggar, basically walk into the character you want to mash to death and you should 'grab' them. Then, you can either stand still and press punch for a 'headbutt' or press the reverse of which direction you're standing & punch for a suplex. Alternatively, you can 'grab' the opponent and then jump directly up and press punch for a Zangief-style aerial slam, or move forward while grabbing, jump, press punch and you get a satisfyingly meaty way of dispatching an opponent. In addition to this, if you jump across the screen towards your opponent and press down & punch, you'll 'splash' your opponent (as Haggar.) Other characters have the same button methods but have different moves which are pussy-grade compared to the Lord Mayor of Metro City. Always play as Mike!
